phd project locale
The Venetian Walls of Nicosia Cyprus lie divided by the buffer zone that has firmly divided the two ethnic communities since 1974. The site specific location (as demonstrated in image below) within the buffer zone and immediately surrounding the green line is full of abandoned homes, a stand still city that reflects ethnic divisions and efforts of remembering and forgetting. This space is now largely claimed by predominantly Turkish immigrants in the North and economic and political migrants in the South. How can the development of socially and politically engaged art projects aid in further comprehending the rapidly changing community and create platforms for much needed communication and contact?
